What is the meaning and origin of the phrase "turning the tables"?

I have found a page in the Talmud (Nedarim 30b) in which a woman questions a Rabbi as to whether is permitted according to the Torah Law and her question is phrased euphemistically "I prepared a table for my husband and he reversed the table". It seems that this is the earliest usage of the phrase "turning the table" and there is means to reverse the situation.
