Can you help me what is 'imagery' in literature?

In literature, imagery is using words to describe a person, place, thing, etc in a way that allows the reader to see it in their mind's eye. Ernest Hemingway used a lot of imagery. He would sometimes dedicate several pages to describe one setting. Although I appreciate his accomplishments, I am not a fan of an overabundance of adjectives or adverbs. I prefer dialogue.
