Is there any contemporary fantasy (maybe not the right word) writers who don't overdo the fantasy element? For a contemporary example I could mention China Miville. Something in a dreamlike, unrealistic world but without all the dragons and Tolkien-bumming and such; I just find that really tedious and repetitive. I can't think of much beyond Miville to give as a starting point but when it comes to the clics I adore Lovecraft, Poe, Dostoevsky and especially Kafka if that helps in any way.
